Digitization Standards

The Furman Digicenter maintains the highest of quality standards, much higher than is typically found online. Because the Digicenter often digitizes old, delicate, and/or unique materials, it is important to create the highest reasonable quality digital object - the first time. Typically, objects are scanned at the following resolutions:

When scanned, images are saved in TIFF format, a file type that allows for no loss in quality. Once scanned, the images are edited and either returned to the professor or prepared for uploading to the collection. While uploading, the images are converted to JPEG-2000 format; this file type is also lossless, but is smaller and more appropriate for the web-based system LUNA.

Because the Digicenter is committed to providing only the highest quality content to the Furman Community through its online collection, some content may be scanned by the Digicenter but not placed in LUNA. Likewise, non-Digicenter created content of insufficient quality may not be placed in LUNA.
