Digitization
The Digicenter offers digitization services for a variety of media. We can currently digitize:
- Projector slides
- Film negatives
- CDs
- DVDs
- Cassette Tapes
- VHS Tapes
- Original analog materials (including transparencies) up to 12.2" by 17.2"
- Original analog materials appropriate for photographing
When digitizing objects, the Digicenter adheres to high digitization standards and copyright requirements.
Inclusion in LUNA
In addition to digitization, the Digicenter makes Furman's own digital objects (assets) available to the Furman community through a web-based digital asset management system, LUNA. The digital objects need not be digitized or created by the Digicenter; faculty are encouraged to provide already digitized materials for inclusion in the online collection. Any materials that you would like others to use and adhere to our copyright policies and digitization standards are often appropriate for inclusion in LUNA.
Materials that are digitized by the Digicenter but not included in LUNA will be returned to the professor in both analog and digital formats. To increase the usability of the resouces that the Digicenter maintains, we gather and organize metadata - the information about the digital objects that are included in LUNA.
Value Added
Once digital objects have been added to LUNA, the Digicenter and the professor will add additional value to each collection. As a standard service, the Digicenter will create interactive maps of the digital objects when appropriate. Once the location of each object has been provided by the contributor or the Digicenter, the Digicenter will geocode each object. The objects will then be mapped and made available online using GoogleEarth. Additionally, the Digicenter can create interactive time lines to organize and visually display data chronologically.
Classroom Support
The Digicenter will customize collection material to fit the instructor's teaching needs and will assist in the access to and use of the LUNA system - both inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, we will assist in designing and supporting classroom assignments that directly coorolate with the Digicenter's mission. Support may include classroom visits, customized handouts, and Digicenter related technology support.
Turn Around Time
We will work on and complete your project as quickly and efficiently as possible, but we also want to and will provide you with the best product possible.
The speed at which the Digicenter is able to complete a project is dependent on several variables, including current Digicenter workload, the amount of materials to be processed (organized, digitized, edited, etc.), and whether or not metadata is easily available. Although the Digicenter can digitize and edit materials relatively quickly, gathering and adding metadata is an arduous task. If metadata is readily available (ie, in printed format previously created and provided by the professor), the Digicenter can add the metadata to the objects. However, if no metadata is available for the Digicenter to add, the professor submitting the collection for digitization will need to assist in adding the metadata.
